Project Case Study: Christmas Creek Iron Ore Mine
Client: Fortescue Metals Group
Location: Christmas Creek, Western Australia
Product(s) deployed:Mega Towers G2 600, Maxi Towers 90 G2
Project Scope:Supply and maintenance of 65 solar lighting towers
Project Overview:
Christmas Creek, operated by Fortescue Metals Group, is one of Australia’s major iron ore mining operations. As part of Fortescue’s commitment to reducing reliance on diesel-powered infrastructure, the company sought a reliable renewable lighting solution for its heavy equipment workshops, main stores, shutdown pads, and hardstand areas. Earthtrack supplied 65 solar lighting towers, mounted on engineered precast concrete blocks with integrated lifting points, ensuring ease of relocation across the site as operational needs changed.

Solution Delivered:
The Earthlight Mega and Maxi Solar Light Towers provided 100% overnight illumination with up to 65 hours of battery backup, ensuring continuous operation even in low sunlight conditions. These towers were mounted on wind-rated concrete blocks, engineered to withstand the environmental conditions of the region. In addition to the supply and installation, Earthtrack provided annual maintenance services to ensure peak performance and longevity of the lighting systems.

Key Outcomes:
Immediate cost savings – Eliminated ongoing hire, servicing, and refueling costs associated with diesel lighting towers. Sustainability impact – Each solar light tower saved approximately 5,000 liters of diesel per year, reducing both fuel costs and carbon emissions. Financial benefits – Cost savings of $6,000 per tower annually in hire fees alone. Operational efficiency – Reliable, low-maintenance lighting that supports 24/7 mining operations. This project highlights Earthtrack’s ability to deliver cost-effective, sustainable, and operationally reliable lighting solutions for large-scale mining applications.
